This site has been created in support of my research surrounding the life and work of Dr. Herman Lynn Womack (1923-1985), a gay publishing and First Amendment pioneer who ran the Guild Press from 1958 to 1972. Rarely using his first name, Womack was known in writing as “H. Lynn Womack” and to his friends simply as “Lynn.”
Excerpts from my research have previously been published as essays in the anthologies The Golden Age of Gay Fiction and 1960s Gay Pulp Fiction: The Misplaced Heritage. My ultimate intention is to write a history of gay life in the United States between the 1940s and the 1970s through the story of Dr. Womack, his personal and publishing activities, and his legal battles.
You can find out more about H. Lynn Womack, this project, and who I am by clicking on the tabs near the top of the page. I welcome all inquiries about this research, and I am particularly interested in speaking with anyone who knew or interacted with Dr. Womack. (If you would like to speak with me, but do not want your name used publicly, that is perfectly fine; I am more than willing to provide a pseudonym.) Click the “Contact” tab at the top of the page for more information, e-mail me directly at email@example.com, or use the contact form below. Thank you!
